Disinsectization of empty grain stores before harvest

Empty grain storage facilities may be a breeding ground for many insects. May and June are the perfect months to implement measures to protect grain against storage pest infestation. Key considerations

Empty grain storage facilities may harbor a range of insects ready to infest incoming grain. To ensure a storage pest-free environment, preventive measures must be adopted well before grain intake. Cleaning or pesticide use alone will not necessarily eliminate the threat posed by pests in empty granaries.

It is estimated that over 90% of farms harbor at least one insect species. With the high prices of cereals and the decision to store them for a long time, planning activities aimed at good storage is the basis of success!

Insects affect stored product are differ in term of behavior, environment or period of occurrence during storage. Pests that infect stored grain can be divided into:

Primary pests

Primary pests damage and contaminate the grain, but cannot be found in the fields. Their foraging increases the level of temperature and humidity, creating suitable conditions for secondary pests and fungi. Typically, these infestation come from pest populations that have already infected the previously grain stock stored in the site.

Secondary  pests

Secondary storage pests, e.g. beetles, sometimes migrate from nearby habitats: haystacks and vegetation. Secondary pests develop on cereals that have already been damaged by physical or biological effects, e.g. cracked or moldy grain, or previously infested with primary pests.
